Revealed: Labour MP's sent eve of conference warning about hard-left
MPs told 'we are acutely aware that the left are still waiting in the wings to take advantage of any discord within the Party'
Word reaches me that the following message has been sent to all MPs and peers gathering in Liverpool for the start of Labour conference.
It appears to have been writtenby the pro-Keir Starmer Labour First group at the start of a conference that looks set to feature a particularly difficult debate on Rachel Reeves’s decision to limit winter fuel payments to the poorest pensioners.
Two of the the biggest unions Unite and Unison were pushing a conference motion demanding a reversal of the policy.
GMB, known to be more supportive of Starmer, have also sent a stinging letter to Reeves warning of the impact of the decision on WFA, which they say will impact on retired members.
The message to MPs from Labour First is as follows:
We’re writing on the eve of Labour’s first conference as the Party of Government in 14years.
The recent victory was hard won - many many activists, members, Cllrs, Party staff and our fantastic candidates worked incredibly hard to win the election.
But behind that was several years of hard graft to win back the Party from those on the hard left who had no interest in winning elections and to bring the Party to the point where we could win.
This conference will grapple with some difficult choices the Government needs to make and help define the future.
But we are acutely aware that the left are still waiting in the wings to take advantage of any discord within the Party.
Going forward maintaining discipline, a focus on delivery, winning future elections and protecting and building the Party should remain our priorities.
This is control-freakery of the worst kind. Many members who have worked tirelessly to win local elections and to try and win general elections have been completely frozen out by the people currently in charge. Whatever happened to party democracy?
